Barrow County

Her PLAN is here to help community members who want to provide that
support to moms and their babies.

Barrow County is a rural county located an hour and a half northeast of Atlanta and half an hour west of Athens in East Central Georgia. As with most metropolitan areas, Atlanta is growing and expanding, bringing new populations to surrounding rural areas. Barrow is one of these areas where population growth is outpacing infrastructure.

How Her PLAN works in Barrow County

When growing communities don’t have the current resources and jobs necessary to support new families, Her PLAN is here to help community members who want to provide that support to moms and their babies. Together, Her PLAN and local leaders assess community needs, respond with projects and programs to fill them, and ensure this vulnerable demographic has their needs met.

About Barrow County

Her PLAN’s state program in Georgia launched in 2025 with the first Her Community officially launched in February of 2026 in Barrow County. Since then, community coalitions of local leaders, providers, and organizations have banded together to meet the needs of abortion-vulnerable women right in their own neighborhoods.

Care Support

What Her Community has built

Barrow County is especially well-equipped in a few areas to support moms. Here is where your
community is already making a difference.

Material or Legal Support

Food Insecurity Support

When a mom in Barrow County needs food assistance, she can walk through the doors of a local church. The Barrow County Benevolence Fund operates a Church of the Month ministry where people needing food assistance can go to a church to receive aid, in addition to food resources.

Recovery and Mental Health

Mental Health Support

After the 2024 school shooting at a local high school, Barrow County responded by building mental health resources that didn’t exist previously. Ministry Village and Abundant Life Counseling now partner with other providers to offer mental health support to pregnant and parenting moms.

Where help is still needed

Every community has areas where more support is needed. These are the gaps Her PLAN and local leaders in [county name] are actively working to address and where your involvement can make a real difference.

Transportation

Getting around is a barrier for moms here

Barrow County has no public transportation. Lyft and Uber are hard to access and too expensive for regular use. For moms trying to get to work, school, or a medical appointment, getting there is one of the biggest barriers they face.

Housing

Stable housing options are extremely limited

New transitional housing programs have opened, but spots are very limited. There are limited renting options in the county for lower income families and waiting lists are a mile long. The county doesn’t have a maternity home, but there are options in localities nearby.

Maternal Healthcare

Moms must travel out of county to deliver

There is no hospital in Barrow County where moms can deliver their baby. Travel out of the county is difficult if a woman has limited childcare options and unreliable transportation. If moms have to travel to deliver their baby, they likely are also not able to travel to receive important prenatal care before the baby is born.

Language

Spanish speaking moms need bilingual support

Barrow County has a rapidly growing Hispanic population, which is reflected in the increase of Spanish-speaking moms seen by the local pregnancy center. Spanish-speaking volunteers are necessary to ensure all moms are empowered in the services they receive, and dedicated strategies are necessary to engage this demographic of moms in need.
