Not a single one of these men or women would be paid for their services today. Many would lose money, as they insisted on paying for critical car parts or filters themselves.
Yet none seemed bothered by these expenses or time spent. Perhaps they were uplifted by the smells of fresh barbecue and pastries filling the air, or the happy chatter of other volunteers setting up signs and craft tables for the children about to arrive with their moms.
More likely, however, they were uplifted by their common purpose.
That purpose became immediately apparent when a woman driving an older vehicle pulled hesitantly into the parking lot. “I’m here for an oil change,” she announced, “Am I in the right place? Is it really free?”
